Claudia Battarra participated in BIOTECH 2026, the Italian Biotechnology Congress (24–26 June 2026), in the Industrial and Environmental Biotechnologies session, with a talk entitled “From Wild to Factory: Domestication Strategies for Non-Model Microalgae as Sustainable Green Biofactories.”

For centuries, we have domesticated plants to increase productivity and adapt them to our needs. Today, it is time to do the same with microalgae. Wild microalgae possess enormous, still largely untapped biotechnological potential. However, unlocking this potential requires overcoming key limitations that currently hinder their efficient industrial exploitation.

The presentation focused on the potential of both model and non-model microalgae as sustainable platforms for industrial biotechnology, and on strategies to accelerate their domestication for biotechnological applications.

Moving from wild to factory means transforming microalgae into robust, sustainable, and highly productive green biofactories for the next generation of industrial biotechnology.
